Aurea Alicia Mangual

Associate Vice President, Political Action/ Legislation

Aurea is a native Puerto Rican who lived in Lake Wales, Florida during the Civil Rights Martin Luther King movement.  She saw for the first time in her young life the separation of people by race.

Aurea is the proud mother of a son and two adopted daughters and 4 grandchildren.

Aurea's humble upbringing and family awareness has allowed her to continually serve the public. In 1980 she began working in the Hunt's point district of The Bronx with Father Louis R. Gigante redevelopment of the community.  She was his personal Secretary and Office Manager of the SEBCO Development composed of 7 newly renovated multifamily apartments.

In order to better serve the residents and educate herself in building management, she began the US Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) management and housing administration training including community organizing.  As a community organizer she asked former Assemblyman and founder of "SOMOS EL Futuro" Hector Diaz who provided her with New York State Parks and Recreation Summer outings to State Parks for the community's youth.  She continued this service for 10 years.

In 1989, she began working in the Bronx Borough President's Office as a Housing Assistant to the Planning and Development Unit.  In this position, she was responsible to conduct building and apartment inspection in multiple dwellings that participated in the  Division of Alternative Management Program (DAMP/HPD)  throughout the Bronx.  These buildings were managed by community organization with the goal of becoming permanent owners after approval and recommendation of the then Borough President Fernando Ferrer.

This was the beginning of Aurea's Union Labor commitment and engagement.  She began by enrolling in the Shop Steward training provided by DC 37.  She began attending Political Committee meetings at the Council engaging other members to participate as well.

Aurea is an AFSCME/DC 37 VIP Member, she participates in the DC 37 PAC meetings.  As a Labor political activist, shee assists in Labor initiatives in and outside of New York State.  Aurea has completed several Labor studies in the Cornell Extension in New York City.  She studied Political Science in International Lawthe Lehman College Continuing Adult Education.

Aurea was highlighted in a special program "En Buena Hora" Puerto Rico that was filmed here in New York City.  Aurea is a genuine Labor Leader and Activist for AFSCME/DC 37 and her Local SSEU 371.
