Shirley A. Williams

Shirley A. Williams earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a concentration in English.  She attended Travelers’ Careers Institute, where she became a Certified Travel Consultant, and attended New York University where she received her Realtor Managers (NYARM) Certification.  She continued her education by taking courses in Labor Law and Personnel Administration.

She has worked for NYC Department of Employment, NYC Economic Development Administration, the YWCA and NYC Housing Preservation and Development.  She held various positions as Human Resources Technical, Assistant Management Analyst, Assistant Executive Director for Personnel and Affirmative Action and Deputy Director.

She joined District Council 37’s Real Estate Employees, Local 1219 in April, 1986 and became active in the Local in 1988.  She served on local committees including the Women’s, Scholarship, Entertainment, Youth and Sports Committees and chaired the Research and Good and Welfare Committees.  She served on the Local’s PEOPLE (Public Employees Organized to Promote Legislative Equality) as Representative and Executive Assistant to the President.

After 27 years of employment, she retired from the NYC Housing Preservation and Development, on January 11, 2014, as Deputy Director for Urban Renewal and Commercial Leasing.

Shirley was elected as a delegate to DC 37 in the early 1990’s and simultaneously served on Local 1219’s Executive Board.  In 2005, she became President of Local 1219 and was re-elected unopposed each term thereafter.

In 2006, she was elected Vice President of DC 37 and a member of DC 37’s Executive Board, and Chairperson of DC 37 Education Committee for which she raised more than $125,000 toward scholarships for the children and grandchildren of DC 37 members and retirees.

In 2007, she received three Outstanding Labor Leader Awards.
