The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) held their 24th National Membership Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Aug. 2 - 6, 2023. The following members of the DC 37 Retirees Association attended: Julia Jorge, Aurea Mangual, Isabel Figueroa, Nellie Gonzalez-Arce and Milagros Crispín.

The theme of the convention was "Together Towards Tomorrow: Trabajadores Para un Futuro Justo" signifying that “Success for our communities and laborers across this country will be realized when we as a community galvanize our efforts to make our voices heard."

Eleven years ago, today – on Aug. 23, 2012 – the DC 37 Retirees Association lost a valiant fighter with the passing of Stu Leibowitz, who was a longtime president of the Association at the time of his death.

AFSCME members in Hawaii urgently need our help.

Please donate to our union’s Fallen Heroes Fund so we can send help to members affected by the wildfires in Hawaii, particularly those in the island of Maui.

AFSCME nurses from affiliates with tens of thousands of members in the health care sector met with U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra this month to share their concerns about the nationwide staffing crisis that is putting health care workers and patients at risk.

As part of its Staff the Front Lines nationwide bus tour, AFSCME will be holding job fairs in cities across the country to recruit people who are interested in good, union jobs working in public service.

Several DC 37 retirees were in the house at Rutgers University’s 46th Northeast Summer School for Union Women. The annual event, sponsored by the United Association for Labor Education (UALE), was held in New Brunswick, N.J., July 10-14, 2023. The conference theme was “We are the Real Infrastructure: Building Powerful Movements.”

MINNEAPOLIS – AFSCME’s Staff the Front Lines bus tour made a stop here today and featured the first hiring hall of the summer.

Minnesota House Majority Leader Jamie Long and Deputy Commissioner of Minnesota Management and Budget Erin Campbell joined members of AFSCME Council 5 and AFSCME Council 65 to encourage Minnesotans to apply for open public service jobs.

The press conference took place outside Minneapolis’ United Labor Center, where a hiring hall took place this morning. Employers from eight Minnesota state agencies attended the event.
